Penske Driver App
Overview: Canada now requires all truck drivers to electronically log their hours while driving. Penske needed to update their current mobile application and admin portal to account for drivers in Canada, and drivers that cross between the US and Canadian borders. The team follows a Scrum framework with the team located in Pennsylvania and Ukraine
Approach: Canada’s new driver mandate is very large. With our product owner as lead, we started to dissect the rulebook to decipher what related to the US version, what was different, and what we needed to account for when drivers cross borders.
Research and Sketching
To breakdown the requirements, I created the following graph to better explain them to our Scrum team during a design workshop.
During the build and development, we were able to speak with the Canadian government and lawmakers on a monthly basis to verify certain laws and influence the mandate for better understanding.
Designs
When a driver enters the app for the first time, and selects ‘Hours of Service’ from the home menu, they are brought to the Duty Status page to view their timers. Drivers are only allowed a certain number of hours they can work, and be on the road. While driving, the Duty Status screen will be displayed at all times and count down their minutes till the end of shift.
To build the following designs, I used Adobe XD, Zeplin, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign.
Off Duty Timers
Before electronic logs, drivers would have to graph out their time spent on paper. Now, it’s done automatically with a list of events below.
Federal inspectors need to view a PDF of a Driver’s logs to make sure drivers are compliant while on the road.
Each screen has a dark mode counterpart for drivers to use at night to better help them focus on the road.
Results and Takeaways
Working with a team that follows Scrum to a T was amazing. From my teammates, I learned how to best communicate with developers and testers. I’ve never worked with a more diligent team and now see how Scrum methodology can be utilized to the fullest.
Due to COVID, we were not able to test our product in front of actual drivers and instead relied on phone interviews for feedback. This was not ideal, but I’m glad we were still able to receive some input from users on the designs.
We are on track to have our application certified by the Canadian government in for the end of 2021, wish us luck! Our next steps include converting the mobile designs for tablet use.
Driver Management App (Desktop Admin Tool)
Driver Management is the desktop app for companies to track and manage their drivers that use the Penske Driver App. I am a UI/UX designer for this app and collaborate with both product teams to ensure cross platform consistency.
